Rustic Hungarian hall table or desk

£175.00

Characterful old pine table with drawer to the front, in attractive ‘period’ green paint.

This table has been loved for many decades with signs of age and use obvious throughout, including several dints to the top and wear marks around the handle. Some evidence of old woodworm in a few places underneath but this has been treated and cannot be seen.

A good sized table that would work well as a small breakfast table, a desk for a study or perhaps as a hall table for a large house. A great piece in a strong colour.

Vintage French priest’s rosary

£38.00

Original and good quality French wooden rosary with cross.  Probably used by a priest or monk and worn during religious services, these rosaries have become highly fashionable, both as dress accessories and as decorative items for the home, for example hung from bed-posts or draped around pictures.

This rosary probably dates from the 1920s and is in very good condition. Handmade with obvious care, the rosary comprises 60 hand carved beads (including one in the shape of a heart where the hoop joins) and a wooden cross at the end, all joined by wires and  tiny wooden links.

A beautiful accessory for the home.

Dimensions

Vintage ‘Peugeot Freres’ coffee grinder in yellow

£42.00

Highly collectable 1940/50s coffee grinder – or ‘moulin’ – made by the famous Peugeot brothers. In working order though with obvious signs of wear giving it a great patina and authentic worn finish. Lovely colour and ideal as a working and decorative piece for the kitchen shelf.

This model has a metal body, wooden top and chrome and wooden handle. It has a metal pull-out draw for the coffee once ground, and is marked with the Peugeot logo. These metal moulins were top of the range, and the Peugeot brothers produced these at their Valentigney workshop for many years prior to moving into car production. The company still makes coffee grinders and they are regarded as being of the best quality.

Attractive late 1900s portrait, oil on canvas

£145.00

Sourced from a dealer in Castres, this is a medium-sized portrait of a local French doctor painted in the late 1900s by a local artist. Beautifully executed, it is a highly decorative piece. There are some losses to the canvas and evidence on the back that most of these have been disguised with black paint added to the reverse so they cannot easily be seen when the picture is hung.

While in obvious shabby chic condition, the portrait retains substantial period charm and atmosphere, looking good in any room.

Matching pair of 1950/60s cocktail or lounge chairs

£275.00

A rare matching pair of faux leather cocktail or lounge chairs, with unusual rounded backs in light red faux leather.  These are probably French given their ‘salon’ look, and are sturdily constructed with each chair benefitting from 23 solid springs beneath strong webbing and encased in a metal frame.

The colour is particularly attractive – a red that is more towards the pink end of the range – set off by original studs around the upholstery. Strong, solid and a great mid-century look for a sitting room, bedroom or large hallway.  In great vintage condition.

Vintage Hungarian country side table or desk

£175.00

Early 20th century Hungarian pine table, with original green paint and white over paint, and pretty cabriole legs.

This is a country piece, in vintage condition, which seems largely untouched (except some repair to the left side where the top meets the legs).  It has some charming wear and tear, commensurate with age and use.  Its unusual dimensions mean it would make an impressive side or hall table, or indeed a desk.  It has a practical deep drawer to the front.

We love its unusual proportions and it would make a charming addition to a country farmhouse and town house.

19th century “rusty” safe – highly original and decorative

£125.00

A very unusual lockable safe of some age, with original working lock and key.  Manufactured by Charles Henry Griffiths & Sons of 43 Cannon Street, London, who were specialist fire and thief-proof safe manufacturers at the end of the 19th century.

Inside, the safe retains its original paint and lock, with three shelves, two brass chains to support the door and a pretty little drawer with knob in the corner.  It also has two carrying handles. We considered applying oil to remove the rust but, actually, it is the earthy original rust colour and beautiful patina which give this piece its unique character.

The inside is equally beautiful, and ideal for stationery or other valuables on a desk, or even for jewellery or as a make-up cupboard. It would also look good anywhere in the home as an unusual stand-alone piece. A rare and very useable find.
