19th century “rusty” safe – highly original and decorative

£125.00

A very unusual lockable safe of some age, with original working lock and key.  Manufactured by Charles Henry Griffiths & Sons of 43 Cannon Street, London, who were specialist fire and thief-proof safe manufacturers at the end of the 19th century.

Inside, the safe retains its original paint and lock, with three shelves, two brass chains to support the door and a pretty little drawer with knob in the corner.  It also has two carrying handles. We considered applying oil to remove the rust but, actually, it is the earthy original rust colour and beautiful patina which give this piece its unique character.

The inside is equally beautiful, and ideal for stationery or other valuables on a desk, or even for jewellery or as a make-up cupboard. It would also look good anywhere in the home as an unusual stand-alone piece. A rare and very useable find.

Each of the 8 drawers has a solid floor and is attractively shaped.  Its dimensions make it a super storage option for cutlery or other kitchen utensils, or indeed to store items from a collection or even for stationery in a study.

19th century portrait of a European gentleman, oil on canvas

£245.00

Very well executed 19th century portrait of a European Gentleman, oil on canvas. There is evidence of a signature and date (1882??) in the top left corner but it is very difficult to make out. There is a beautiful artistic quality to this piece, and the subject is clearly middle-European judging by his attire. The painting has been professionally repaired by the previous owner (see back image), and there is one small area to the bottom where the paint has been lost (see image), but this does not to our minds detract from its overall quality and charm.

This is a beautiful piece of art that would look stunning in the modern home.

Stylish Victorian leatherette tub chair

£138.00

Attractive late Victorian tub chair in studded green leatherette with original casters.

This is a stylish chair which can be used as a decorative bedroom piece or an occasional chair.   Its’ petite size gives it plenty of flexibility as a decorative or practical piece anywhere in the home or office.

We particularly like the vintage studding, the lovely coloured green leatherette and the curves to the arms and back.

In vintage condition, it has been reinforced under the base cushion, and is comfortable.   There are a few little imperfections to the leatherette (with a slightly more visible mark – see photo), all part of being a 100 years’ old vintage item.
