19th century “rusty” safe – highly original and decorative
A very unusual lockable safe of some age, with original working lock and key. Manufactured by Charles Henry Griffiths & Sons of 43 Cannon Street, London, who were specialist fire and thief-proof safe manufacturers at the end of the 19th century.
Inside, the safe retains its original paint and lock, with three shelves, two brass chains to support the door and a pretty little drawer with knob in the corner. It also has two carrying handles. We considered applying oil to remove the rust but, actually, it is the earthy original rust colour and beautiful patina which give this piece its unique character.
The inside is equally beautiful, and ideal for stationery or other valuables on a desk, or even for jewellery or as a make-up cupboard. It would also look good anywhere in the home as an unusual stand-alone piece. A rare and very useable find.
