1915 still life, oil on canvas Out Of Stock

1915 still life, oil on canvas

Atmospheric still life of various items on a tray and tablecloth in the early 20th century naïve style.  Unframed, this lovely picture is dated 1915 in the left corner and signed in the right corner (though we can’t quite make out the name).

There is another signature – perhaps the retailer or recipient – on the frame at the back.  We believe this is probably German and it is a nice and stylish evocation of the early 20th century period.

There are a couple of tiny holes to the canvas but these are hardly noticeable and do not detract from the picture.

Antique Hungarian cabinet Out Of Stock

Antique Hungarian cupboard

Beautiful and charming 19th century Hungarian country cupboard.    This unusual freestanding vintage piece is completely untouched, and the original paint and patina are stunning. There is a lovely little original key which turns, but does not lock.

The original catch on the left door is fully functional.  Both doors close (a little magnet has been added for extra help).

Two handy shelves inside are providing great storage.  Can be hung on a wall (using the original rings on the back) or would look equally beautiful standing on a surface.

Pair of vintage botanical pressed flowers – Lady’s Mantle and Wood-Bitter Vetch

Attractive pair of pressed flowers, both collected during the same 1939 expedition by Swedish botanist Torvald Fransson. These are lovely pieces of artwork, both in good vintage condition (with slight discoloration of the paper that is evidence of its pre-war heritage).  One is a pressed root, stalk and flower of Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris), an herbaceous perennial that is a wildflower and member of the rose family found in Europe and Greeland. This was collected in Skillingaryd, south Sweden and pressed on 24 May 1939.  The second is a root, stalk and flower of an unidentified plant which is a member of the Leguminosae (or pea family) but we think it is probably wood-bitter vetch (given reference to orobus) which grows along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. This was also collected by the same botanist in the same area, pressed on 24 May 1939.  (A total of 5 pairs from the same botanist is available.)

The detailed description of the annotations on each page adds to the interest and appeal.

Would look wonderful properly framed or very simply hung on a peg.

Turn of the century French hall rack or kitchen shelf Out Of Stock

Turn of the century French hall rack or kitchen shelf

In good condition and probably dating back to the turn of the century, this is an unusually large hallway coat rack with shelf or a shelf for the kitchen.

In chippy paint, the rack has 5 handy hooks and the large shelf above has two struts with ‘eyes’ so it can be affixed to a wall.

This would make a great addition to a hallway or could equally be used in the kitchen for hanging pots and pans and displaying beautiful items on the shelf, perfectly-sized to sit above a fireplace or cooker

It could also work as an attractive bathroom piece, or a children’s bedroom shelf for books and toys.

vintage Hungarian flax comb Out Of Stock

Vintage Hungarian flax comb

This is a very beautiful accessory which was originally used to tease out the tangles in the wool or separate the fibers from the flax plant in order to spin them into linen thread.

Wooden flax combs tend to be rarer than metal ones – wooden combs were found largely in remote rural villages as the farmers had limited access to metal.

A very sculptural and organic object with a beautiful natural patina that would look stunning displayed on a shelf or hung on a wall.

Beautiful workshop cabinet

Beautiful, and characterful, small 1940s workshop cupboard.  Possibly British, this cabinet can be used as a great little storage cupboard.  It can be fixed to a wall or rest on a table or desk. Filled with various shelves and drawers, it is ideal as a receptacle for small personal items or stationery.

We fell in love with its character and have kept it completely untouched.  It still retains its original handles, lock and hinges, and although this does not seem to be the original paint, it is very old and has not been repainted for many decades.

It has many imperfections, such as scratches, knocks and uneven paint which are commensurate with age.  There are signs of historic woodworm which has been treated.

A cupboard with lovely proportions and immense charm that would look stunning in the vintage home.

Pair of vintage botanical pressed flowers – bearberry and white clover

Attractive pair of pressed flowers, both collected during the same 1939 expedition by Swedish botanist Torvald Fransson. These are lovely pieces of artwork, both in good vintage condition (with slight discoloration of the paper that is evidence of its pre-war heritage).  One is a pressed root, stalk and flower of the Arctostaphylos uva-ursi – or more commonly the bearberry, an evergreen, trailing shrub with alternate, delicately-veined leaves and reddish papery bark and small bell-shaped, pinkish-white flowers. The bearberry is found  in the subarctic Northern Hemisphere and, in the US and Canada, it is known as Kinnikinnick. This was collected by Fransson in Vaggeryd, a small community in the south of Sweden and pressed on 22 9 May 1939.  The second is a root, stalk and flower of the white clover (Trifolium Repens), a herbaceous species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae, native to Europe and central Asia. This was also collected by the same botanist in the same area, pressed on 5 July 1939.  (A total of 6 pairs from the same botanist is available.)

The detailed description of the annotations on each page adds to the interest and appeal.

Would look wonderful properly framed or very simply hung on a peg.
